These Sportneer 4 in 1 Free Weights Dumbbells Set are an excellent choice for someone who is beginning to lift weights, or for someone going through rehab. You get two dumbbells with 8 plates that can be added on to them. The handle without added weights is 2 pounds, and each additional weight adds a half pound. When you use all of them, the dumbbell will be 5 pounds. So it's not a heavy weight set, but you don't necessarily have to lift heavy to get benefits. The weights are covered in a slick plastic, and the handles have a soft, rubberized grip that make them comfortable to hold. To add or remove a weight, you simply twist the plate in the desired direction. There is a locking mechanism on the ends of the plates and you just twist until it locks in place, or untwist to release. I did find that the end cap was a bit harder for me to twist off, but I think that is mostly a matter of getting familiar with how it works. I felt like the lock was secure, as long as you have completely turned it into place. It kind of snaps in when it is locked, you will understand once you try it. This set gives you a variety of weights without having to have 3 or 4 individual dumbbells. This makes them much easier to store in a smaller place, and certainly easier to transport. The box it comes in has cutouts for the dumbbells and the plates, and I will keep this to store them in. The set has a nice choice of colors, instead of the dull grey of gym sets. I got the bright cornflower and find it to be attractive without being garish. The set has no discernable smell, even being made in China and of plastic and rubber. I like that the ends are squared off instead of round, so you don't have to worry about them rolling away. And even though they are coated in plastic, they are still metal weights underneath, so you should protect your floors from accidental drops by using a mat. When I ordered the set, the price was $59.99, which I think is too high even for such a good product. It currently retails for $35.99, which is a much more reasonable price. And even though they are marketed to women, men or boys can certainly benefit from this set; get them the black set if that helps! LOL I can definitely recommend this weight set.
